Advanced Search

The Advanced Search function allows you to input particular criteria to make your results more exact. You may use any combination of one or more search fields to limit your search. The more fields you use, the smaller your result set will be. To reset the search screen, click the Clear button. You can browse all terms in a field by selecting the "select terms" link. Boolean Operators AND, OR, NOT work in all fields.

Search Transcript and Notes for any word spoken or shown (like a screen with a historian's name) in any video. This field also searches video summaries and will search newsreel release notes. Combine this field with the indexed fields below for more powerful searching. For example, search the transcript for "Vietnam" and enter "Kennedy" as the person discussed to find videos about Kennedy where Vietnam is discussed.

Search Title and Series for a specific video title or series title. The field searches for any video title or series title in the database.

Collection: Limit video to a collection name, for example United Newsreel. Collection names are broad categories to help you navigate the video by origin.

Video Type: Select the type of video you want to retrieve. By default all video types are selected.

All Subjects: This field combines all the separate subject categories listed below it: person discussed, historical events, historical eras, year discussed, place discussed, and topic.

Person Discussed: Find videos that discuss a specific person. Note that this field finds video about a certain person. To find a person speaking or narrating, use the fields for narrator or speaker (forthcoming).

Historical Event: Search for video discussing a specific historical event.

Historical Era: Search for video discussing an historical era. Note that historical era covers a much broader span of time than Historical Event above.

Year Discussed: Search for videos by specific years discussed. To search for a single year, enter the same value in both year boxes.

Place Discussed: Search for videos by specific places discussed.

Topics: Search for videos by specific topics not covered in other fields. For example, place or person as subject would be searched in the place or people field.

Publisher: Search for videos by specific publishers of the video.

Publication Date: Search for videos by specific years a video was published. To search for a single year, enter the same value in both year boxes.

Production Staff: Search for videos by people involved in the production of the video.

Sort results by: By default we return videos by relevancy to your search. Select sort by "title" to return them in alphabetical order by title.
